Complex Trauma

We specialize in treating complex trauma- not just PTSD. Complex trauma is different- it comes from repeated traumatic experiences over a significant period of time and often involves relational trauma. Complex trauma impacts how we perceive ourselves, how we think and our patterns of behavior. Complex trauma doesn’t always look like typical PTSD- that’s why its essential to work with a therapist who specializes in complex trauma, not just PTSD.

About complex trauma

Complex trauma is different than trauma from a single event — in where it comes from and how it impacts us. Complex trauma develops from repeated experiences of toxic stress, emotional abuse, chaotic environments, and the challenges of being raised in a dysfunctional family.

When you’ve had to live in survival mode for so long, it can leave deep patterns on your nervous system that affect how we feel, think, act, and what we believe about ourselves.

Healing is possible. It’s so important to have a therapist who understands the differences in complex trauma and how to treat it in therapy. All of our therapists work with complex trauma and can help you break patterns of generational trauma.

Common signs of complex trauma may include:

  • Feeling constantly on edge or restless & struggling to relax
  • Anxiety (when when you KNOW nothing is technically wrong)
  • Emotional ups & downs
  • Difficulty opening up & trusting others
  • Feeling disconnected in your relationships
  • People pleasing & difficulty setting boundaries
  • Erfectionism
  • Feeling easily overwhelmed & triggered
  • Fear of rejection or abandonment
  • Difficulty remembering parts of your childhood
