Somatic Therapy

Trauma, chronic stress, anxiety & depression can leave us disconnected from our bodies & stuck in our minds. Somatic therapy aims to help rebuild the mind-body connection, so that you can truly heal from the inside out.

About somatic therapy

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented therapeutic model developed by Dr. Peter Levine that helps heal trauma and other stress disorders. SE incorporates a trauma-informed therapeutic approach with techniques of body awareness and neuroscience. After experiencing a traumatic event, some people may become “stuck” in a trauma response of “fight, flight or freeze”. For example, a person “stuck” in a flight response may be experiencing severe anxiety, panic, hypervigilance, restlessness, and many other symptoms.

How somatic therapy works

  • The goal of somatic therapy is to support clients in processing traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive space, helping them move toward becoming “unstuck” from these patterns.
  • In a session, the therapist works with small pieces of the trauma at a time, carefully tracking physical responses and bodily sensations.
  • Clients are guided to connect with their body, identify places of safety, and access supportive resources.
  • By working with trauma in this safe, body-centered way, clients are often able to complete the trauma response and release what has been held in the nervous system — creating more space for healing and resilience.
